After all the hardships Liesel has faced already, at such young age, trust is something very hard to come by. Out of everyone in Liesel’s life Hans Hubermann was that one person who provided stability and fatherly love in her life. Hans and his wife, Rosa, became Liesel’s foster parents after her mother decided she could not finically provide a stable home for her two children. Liesel refers to Hans as “Papa” and he treats her like she was his own blood daughter. He comforts her night after night after suffering from endless nightmares of her younger brother who died on the trip to Molching. To keep her mind off the nightmares Hans began reading the grave diggers handbook with Liesel. From this point on it was a nightly tradition late at night to secretly read together. Hans is against the Nazi Party however does not admit it in public so his family can stay protected. One of the biggest conflicts Hans faces is the fact that he decides not to join the Nazi party even though his son is in it. On Hitler’s birthday Hans and his son get into a heated argument over him not joining. I commend Hans because he was fighting for what he believed in with not joining the Nazi party.
I also commend Hans for not joining the nazi party it must have been difficult to go against his country and his son. I think seeing that type of bravery is one of the factors that made liesel a strong young woman.
ReplyDeleteYes, Hans had it extremely hard with not only going against his country, but against his son too. It's kind of sad that Liesel is more of his daughter than his son is his son. Liesel and Hans need each other to go on and stay strong in this hard time.
ReplyDeleteTrust was one thing that Hans and Liesel always had with one another. Hans always protected and comforted her whenever she needed it and hid things from Rosa. Without Hans, Liesel would have never been able to find respect within herself and work to better herself. A character like Hans is hard to come by because he displays a "Good German" rather than one without a heart.
ReplyDeleteHans is a very important figure in Liesel's life. Him not joining the Nazi party and actually hiding a Jewish man is a risky but great example for Liesel. This just teaches Liesel to stand up for what she believes in and do the right thing.
ReplyDeletethere is no doubt that Hans is an important character in Liesel's life, the fact that he does things that are not normal like hiding a Jew in his house and not joining the Nazi party is in my opinion what makes him different.
